Do you need documented volunteer hours for school or work? Do you love to help keep our community a beautiful and fun place to live? If you said yes, join other dedicated Dahlgren Trail volunteers in our bi-annual clearing of litter along the section of Indiantown Road in the proximity of our trail parking area. You don't to bring anything except a happy attitude and some clothes that can get dirty!
Meet at 12:00 PM at the King George American Legion located at 10021 Dahlgren Rd, King George, VA 22485.
Best Practices for Adopt A Highway Trash Pickup
1. ALWAYS work on the left side of the road, facing traffic. Don’t ever turn your back to cars.
2. Bright colored shirts or vests are best.
3. Gloves, long pants, grabbers, water, hand sanitizers, sunblock, and hats are all good ideas.
4. Fill your bags! We are trying to get rid of plastics. If you reach the end of your section with a partially filled bag, combine it with others and leave your empty bags with the final pile; we will
separate them.
5. Seal your bag either by tying or zip ties.
6. Only pickup trash as far off the road as you are comfortable. You do not need to climb into ditches, low lying areas, steep embankments, or over guard rails. VDOTs property ends at the low point of the drainage ditch along the road. Your safety is the primary concern during this event.
7. Leave organic materials: sticks, piles of leaves, mushrooms, dead animals, etc. They will naturally decay.
8. Be careful with broken glass and trash you may think is dangerous. If you are uncomfortable picking up ANY item, then call a team member. If you believe the item is dangerous, leave it and let me know us know.
9. We will pick up all bags at the end of the event and take them to the dump.
10. Return all borrowed materials (gloves, vests, grabbers) to the trailer when you finish.
