What the Program Is
Massive-Scale Restoration: Mission:Iconic Reefs plans to restore three-million square feet of habitat over seven reefs in NOAA’s Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary by year 2040—the equivalent of 52 football fields
Empowering Community Stewards: This project recognizes that we cannot succeed alone. The Iconic Reef Guardians aims to empower scuba divers and snorkelers to be knowledgeable and supportive of coral restoration efforts and to become stewards of Mission: Iconic Reef sites.

Why We Do It
Restoring to a Functional State: We aim for 25% coral cover because that is the threshold where a reef can finally begin to repair itself and naturally seed neighboring habitats.
Protecting a Vital Ecosystem: These reefs are essential to the ocean’s health; over a quarter of all marine fish rely on these specific ecosystems during their life cycles.
Safeguarding Human Benefits: Healthy reefs are critical for the community, providing everything from local recreation and food to coastal protection and oxygen production.
Changing the Future: This is an urgent, unprecedented intervention to reverse the decline of our reefs and ensure they remain vibrant for generations to come.
