Did you know that both California and Sonoma Valley are biodiversity hotspots? As many as a quarter of California’s species exist in this compact area, a place that comprises only a tenth of 1% of California’s entire land area! Join us this during this California Biodiversity Week in a bioblitz focused on the birds of Sugarloaf along parts of the Hillside, Creekside, and Lower Bald trails.
Meet at the White Barn. This free event requires registration, as it is limited to 12 participants. We will be using apps such as Merlin and iNaturalist to document spotted species. If you haven’t used iNaturalist, or haven’t made an observation for a while, this is your chance – just make sure to load the iNaturalist app on your phone before you head out to the park and that your device is fully charged. Participants of any level of experience or mobility can help find, photograph, and/or identify life in the park. Join or view our iNaturalist project at

This event is part of California Biodiversity Week along with others hosted from September 6-14. Throughout this week, individuals, communities, and organizations will host in-person and virtual events to inspire discovery of our state’s remarkable nature, while encouraging everyday actions to protect and steward it. Ease of access: The White Barn parking area has one van-accessible designated parking spot, one accessible porta-potty, and a potable water spigot near the information kiosk. The Creekside Nature trailhead from the White Barn is ADA compliant for about 0.1 miles. Our route for this hike veers off to the left across a narrow bridge and single-track trail that connects with Hillside. Our route continues uphill to the former boy scout camp and back down again to the ADA Creekside Nature Trail to its second trailhead across from the main day use parking area. The main day use parking lot has one accessible vault toilet but no water access. From here, the route goes up for about nearly 0.4 miles, starting on a single-track dirt trail that widens into a gravel trail and descends until it reaches the Robert Ferguson Observatory. From the Observatory, a 0.1-mile, flat, paved road returns us to the White Barn parking area.
