Festival of Lights, or Boun Lai Heua Fai, also known as Boun Ouk Phansa, marks the end of “Buddhist Lent”. Festival of Lights is celebrated at the end of the rainy season on the full moon of the 11th lunar month. This means the date will be different each year.
An evening of wishes involves people raising their beautiful paper lanterns to their foreheads in silent prayer before releasing them to float on the surface of the river. This involves floating ritual flowers onto the river to send away ill thoughts or bad luck and welcome fresh beginnings, while paying respect to the spirit of the waters.
