About the event

Exploring the Six Sources - Session 2: The Second & Third Sources
The Principles tell us how we hope to live. The Sources invite us into an ongoing conversation about where those hopes come from—and how they continue to evolve.

This Fall, we have had a successful discussion series looking at the eight Principles. Rev. Brian has proposed a follow up course looking at the six Sources of our faith. In theological circles it is not sufficient to have a set of beliefs (or in our case Principles). Religions are also expected to support or ‘justify’ those beliefs. On what do you base our values? We UU’s have an eclectic list, but we also have an approach that is unique in religious discussion. Brian says that conversations about our Sources are sometimes more lively than discussions of the Principles.

The format will be similar to the Principles course. It will be four two-hour sessions from 10-12 on Saturdays when Brian is in town. He will open with some brief remarks and then lead an open discussion.

Everyone welcome,

In session 2 we will look at the fourth and fifth Principles.
“We affirm and promote…

A free and responsible search for truth and meaning;

The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large."

Rev. Brian will offer some background, but most of your time will be spent sharing your understanding and interpretation of each Principle.

Everyone welcome, registered or not.

The sources we draw inspiration from are as follows:

1. The direct experience of that transcending mystery and wonder, affirmed in all cultures, which moves us to a renewal of the spirit and an openness to the forces which create and uphold life;

2. The words and deeds of prophetic women and men which challenge us to confront powers and structures of evil with justice, compassion, and the transforming power of love;

3. Wisdom from the world’s religions which inspires us in our ethical and spiritual life;

4. Jewish and Christian teachings which call us to respond to God’s love by loving our neighbours as ourselves;

5. Humanist teachings which counsel us to heed the guidance of reason and the results of science, and warn us against idolatries of the mind and spirit;

6. Spiritual teachings of Earth-centred traditions which celebrate the sacred circle of life and instruct us to live in harmony with the rhythms of nature.
