OUTWARD BOUND
by Sutton Vane
directed by Robert Wellington
ABOUT THE PLAY...
Outward Bound is a ghost story in the true sense, since all of the characters are ghosts. A group of seven passengers are embarked on an ocean liner, and we begin to realize that they are unaware of how they got on the ship or where it is going. Eventually one of them realizes that they are dead. As that person works to convince the others of their situation, they must face the question of what awaits them at the end of the voyage.

AUDITION DETAILS:
The play takes place some time between the first and second world wars. The characters are British, so some attention at an accent would be helpful, but simply portraying the character and handling the language can do a lot to convey the idea.
*Auditions will consist of cold readings from the play

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN: ( 3 Females/ 5 Males/TBD)
TOM PRIOR - A pleasant and cheerful man. He has lived mostly for pleasure, but has really harmed no one other than himself. He is the one who first discovers that they are deceased. (Male 30 - 50)
REV WILLIAM DUKE - A truly good man, tormented by the fear that he has not been good enough (Male 30 - 50)
MRS CLIVEDEN-BANKS - A fading beauty. A social climber who married for money. As a newly arrived member of the aristocracy, she flaunts her social prejudices in a way that a true aristocrat would not. Something of a comic relief character. (Female 40+)
MR LINGLEY - A ruthless businessman. Loud, brash, and arrogant. He feels that money and power are the answer to everything and has climbed over everything and everyone he has ever met to get them (Male - 40+)
MRS MIDGET - Lower class, she tends to be shy around the other passengers. She uses words and phrases that mark her as different from the others. How the other characters treat and react to her tends to say a great deal about them. (Female 50+)
ANN
and
HENRY - A mysterious young couple who keep to themselves and seem to somehow know both more and less than the other passengers. They are very much afraid of being separated. (One female one male - both in their twenties)
SCRUBBY - The ship’s steward. The consummate servant. Always polite and friendly. He (or she) knows more than he tells. Scrubby has all the answers as long as you know the right questions. (Written for a male but could be female. Could be any age.)
REV FRANK THOMSON - An old acquaintance of Duke, probably an instructor or headmaster at the seminary, now acting as the examiner of souls. Like Scrubby, he is unfailingly polite. Jovial when he can be; stern when he has to be but never angry or accusative. Only appears in one scene but dominates the stage when he is on. A man who knows that he is in absolute control of the situation. (Male - 50+)
