About the event

Hispanic Heritage Month Series I Barrio Edition: From the Block to the Mic
Hispanic Heritage Month Series | Barrio Edition

HOSTED BY Susana Elizarraraz!!

From the Block to the Mic I Full-on Latino energy, vibrant, colorful, and alive with rock en español, soul, reggaetón, cumbia, and barrio beats. Not a lounge… a celebración + resistencia

📅 September 17th | 🕕 6:00–7:30 PM
📍 Chicano Center for the Arts / Latinx Education Collaborative

Picture this:
Bright colors. The smell of street tacos in the air. Drinks flowing — from palomas to agua fresca.

A DJ spinning rock en español, soul, reggaetón, cumbia, and hip hop between each performer, matching their energy, dropping beats mid-performance, and even looping powerful lines from the mic.

This isn’t your typical event.
This is storytelling from the soul, from abuelita’s porch to the block, from backyard carne asadas to the frontlines of changing.

Part 1: Cultura + Corazón – Organizing Through Art (6:00–6:30 PM)
💥 Hands-on workshop where you turn your stories, barrio history, and life lessons into art that moves people.
💥 Writing and performance exercises to bring your words to life.
💥 DJ keeps the vibe alive with música that makes you feel it in your bones.
🍹 Drinks (alcoholic & non) available throughout — palomas, micheladas, agua fresca, and more.

Part 2: From the Block to the Mic – Live Poetry + Music (6:30-7:00 PM)
🎤 Open mic for poets, rappers, storytellers, and singers.
🎵 DJ reacts live — cumbia drops after a fiery poem, reggaetón beat switches for rap verses, soft soul grooves for tender moments.
🍸 Bar & bebidas station — because we celebrate as hard as we resist.

Why?
Porque el barrio sabe — our cultura is loud, proud, and unstoppable. This night is about lifting our voices, moving our bodies, and claiming space through rhythm and palabra.
