How Are Folk Instruments Adapting to Our Times?

This immersive session invites participants to see, touch, hear, and understand the rich world of Rajasthani folk instruments. Through guided demonstrations and stories shared by folk musicians, participants will explore the materiality, craftsmanship, and sonic uniqueness of instruments like the khartal, a rhythmic clapper that is easy to learn and deeply rooted in Rajasthan’s musical traditions. Archival video clips will further contextualize the role of these instruments in folk performance and daily life.

Participants will also have the opportunity to learn to play the khartal from either a renowned artist or a skilled local musician (based on availability and budget). Optionally, the session may include a hands-on segment where participants build their own folk-inspired instruments, either using natural materials or by reimagining them through recycled urban waste like plastic or fabric scraps. All materials will be provided, and the workshop is open to all skill levels.
