"SAX MANIAC: The Life and Times of James Chance" delves into the groundbreaking career of James Siegfried, better known as James Chance or James White, a seminal figure in the late 1970s and early 1980s New York City "No Wave" music scene. Produced and directed by his brother, David Siegfried, the documentary chronicles James's journey from his early days in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he first explored jazz and protopunk.
After moving to New York in 1975, James quickly became a prominent artist in the avant-garde music community, rejecting conventional punk and new wave with his cutting-edge blend of free jazz improvisation, James Brown-esque funk rhythms, and a distinctive punk attitude. The film explores his formation of influential bands such as Teenage Jesus and the Jerks (with Lydia Lunch) and The Contortions, whose intense and often confrontational live performances became legendary.
The documentary also covers James's alter ego, James White and the Blacks, a project that further explored his unique fusion of sounds. The untold story of the second half of his career is revealed, including his comeback tours and recordings, performances alongside reunited original Contortions members, and his film noir influenced adaptations. The film also touches on James's personal life, including his relationships with romantic and artistic partner Anya Phillips, and his longtime life partner Judy Taylor (Bozanich).
"SAX MANIAC" captures the essence of James Chance's uncompromising artistry and his lasting impact as a musical maverick who consistently pushed boundaries. With over 300 photos, live interviews with James, and a soundtrack packed with James Chance recordings, the documentary offers an intimate look at the life of an artist who truly lived as an outsider, leaving an indelible mark on music history.
