Baron Crâne
In 2014, Baron Crâne emerged from the experimental, uninhibited stream of instrumental jam sessions, and since then has been synthesizing its surprising stylistic associations into various albums, noted not only for their singularity in relation to the surrounding underground scene, but also for the perpetual renewal of their recipe. Baron Crâne’s projects are like no other, not even their predecessors. An eponymous debut album released in 2015, followed by a second, Electric Shades, are the beginnings of a definite inclination for sonic itinerancy. From jazz fusion to heavy rock, Baron Crâne doesn’t confine itself to any one aesthetic, navigating between its many influences with disconcerting ease.

The trio reached its current form in 2017, with Léo (guitar), Léo second of the name (drums) and Olivier (bass), together driving Baron Crâne in a new direction. With an eye for detail and a mathematical approach to their work, the trio chisel out their mosaic-like structure, adding a new branch in 2020 with the release of Commotions on the Mrs Red Sound label. While the storytelling of its powerful riffs, contagious groove and upbeat rhythms has nothing to envy verbal poetry, the vocal collaboration of singer Arthur Brossard and rapper INCH extends Baron Crâne’s universe into hitherto unexplored territory.

With a desire to tell new stories, the three musicians met in the studio during the confinement period to write Les Beaux Jours. By inviting hand-picked guests, they embrace their otherness, and express their openness to the Other, to the unedited and to diversity. Saxophonist Guillaume Perret is invited on Mercury, while Robby Marshall’s flute floats between two waters on Merinos. A second drum kit on Danjouer, Cyril Bodin’s vocals on Quarantine and the guitarist’s on the eponymous track complete this stylistic exercise. As a wealth of aesthetics, rhythms and voices, Les Beaux Jours expresses the need to stand out as a creative force, to appreciate the long view and refuse to compromise, in the image of a revolt that calls for a return to a form of artistic truth and sincerity.

Once on stage, it’s the harmonious combination of these hybrid pieces that enables Baron Crâne to unite an eclectic audience at their concerts in France and Europe. All that remains is the intensity of the celebration of feelings and the trance of sensations, both summoned by the trio’s obvious pleasure in playing their cathartic compositions live. From French stages to the German ones of Münster or the Krach Am Bach festival shared with Ufomammut, Mother’s Cake or Slift, Baron Crâne has established itself wherever its music can resonate, including in the ears of the Gare Jazz audience, which it took over in
May 2023. In the summer of 2024, the trio is set to take on the psychedelic scene at the Bear Stone festival in Croatia and the Red Smoke festival in Poland.

Specht Ruprecht
