Garba is a vibrant and energetic folk dance that originates from the state of Gujarat India. Here is a description: Origin and Significance: Garba is traditionally performed during the nine-night Hindu festival of Navratri (meaning "nine nights") which is dedicated to the worship of the feminine form of divinity especially the Goddess Durga (or Amba Mata). The dance is a ritualistic and devotional form of worship. Dance Style and Pattern: It is a circle dance and a social dance. Participants dance in concentric circles moving in a counter-clockwise direction. The movements typically start slowly and gradually increase in speed and energy. The dance is characterized by rhythmic clapping of hands and sweeping graceful side-to-side actions. Symbolism: The circular pattern symbolizes the cyclical nature of time in Hinduism (birth life death and rebirth). The dancers revolve around a central object traditionally a Garbha Deep—an earthen pot with a light inside. Garbha means "womb" and the lamp symbolizes the jiva (soul) inside the body or the constant unmoving presence of the Goddess amidst the changing cycles of the universe. Sometimes a statue or picture of the Goddess Durga is placed in the center instead. Attire: Women wear a traditional three-piece outfit called a Chaniya Choli (a long embroidered skirt blouse and dupatta/scarf) often brightly colored and decorated with mirror work and intricate embroidery. Men wear a traditional dress like Kediyu (a short rounded kurta) with Kafni Pajamas and a turban (pagadi). Music: The dance is accompanied by lively folk music singing and instruments such as the dhol (double-headed drum) dholak and various metallic idiophones like cymbals. In short Garba is much more than just a dance; it is a joyous communal and deeply devotional celebration of the feminine divine and the continuous cycle of life.
