La Verbena de la Paloma
This is probably the first production of a Spanish zarzuela
in Brussels ever.
Performances: 1st to 4th October 2025 at 8pm; plus matinée on Sat 4th October at 2.30pm.
La Verbena de la Paloma is one of the most popular Spanish zarzuelas, with music by Tomas Breton, and a libretto by Ricardo de la Vega, first staged in 1894 in Madrid.
It is warm, of the people, funny, energetic. It has wonderfully lively music, singing and dancing, including flamenco. One of the main topics of this zarzuela is the time-honoured theme of jealousy.
Inspired by Aitor Sorozabal, one of the lead singers; with musical direction of the chorus and small orchestra by Steven De Mesmaeker; directed by Lluís Bronsoms and produced by Peter Willis of ETCetera, in close collaboration with Teatro.be, the well known Spanish language theatre company based in Brussels.
La Verbena de la Paloma is performed in Spanish, with surtitles in French and English.
It will be preceded by some famous arias from an earlier work inspired by the theme of jealousy: another Spanish themed opera, though in French, Bizet’s Carmen.
