Crossing Open Ground

On October 25, Kayenta Arts will present Crossing Open Ground, a large-scale outdoor music event set against the majestic backdrop of Snow Canyon State Park, produced by Liquid Music. This one-day-only performance features acclaimed national and international artists performing alongside 36 local musicians in partnership with Utah Tech University. The acoustic score — composed for winds, brass and percussion — is by Pulitzer Prize- and Grammy Award-winning composer John Luther Adams.

​​Crossing Open Ground celebrates the connection between community, nature and live music. The piece has only been performed twice before — at Lincoln Center in New York City and commissioned by the Aspen Music Festival and School. Adams, an environmentalist and composer described by The New Yorker’s Alex Ross as “one of the most original musical thinkers of the new century,” shares that his music is “an invitation to slow down, pay attention and remember our place within the larger community of life on earth.” During the performance, audience members will be surrounded by musicians in the natural amphitheater of Snow Canyon State Park.
