Understanding polymerization kinetics and self-assembly in PISA and Coacervate systems

Presented by

Riya Singh, PhD Candidate

UCI

Abstract: My research examines how polymerization kinetics are connected to phase transitions, particularly in Polymerization-Induced Self-Assembly (PISA). In PISA, the growth of polymer chains is directly linked to their self-assembly into nanostructures such as micelles or vesicles. A common observation in the field is that polymerization rates shift significantly when self-assembly begins, yet the mechanistic origins of these rate changes remain unclear. While they are often attributed to local variations in monomer and polymer concentrations, this explanation lacks direct experimental support. My work explores additional kinetic factors, such as the exchange of species between coexisting phases and phase-dependent rate constants, to better understand the mechanisms drivingthese changes.

I also study coacervate systems, where liquid-liquid phase separation strongly influences reaction kinetics, but the chemical principles behind these effects are still poorly defined. By combining theoretical and experimental approaches, my work aims to establish a deeper understanding of how polymerization and self-assembly interact. The goal is to develop ways to control polymerization kinetics to precisely tune the morphology and properties of nanostructures, an area with broad potential for advanced materials, nanomedicine, and drug delivery applications.

Abstract: As we integrate several novel modalities into our pipeline, we acknowledge the resource allocation challenges this entails and have taken strategic steps to strengthen our capabilities. Our key initiatives include reinforcing teams with specialized expertise, investing in cutting-edge technologies, collaborating with external partners, and enhancing our infrastructure. By focusing on these priorities, we are well-positioned to address resource constraints, successfully incorporate novel modalities, and advance our mission to deliver breakthrough therapies to patients worldwide

Location: This is a hybrid event; virtual via AbbVie Teams Account and In-person at the AbbVie Campus, 2525 Dupont Drive, Irvine, CA, 92612. The presentation will be at the theater in RD2, Level 1. Please see attached map and fill out emailed forms for on-site attendance.
