About the event

Anna North in conv with Sarah Bond - Bog Queen
Writers' Workshop alum Anna North will read from her newest novel, Bog Queen, and will be joined in conversation with University of Iowa Associate Professor Sarah Bond. Described by publisher Bloomsbury as containing "a mystery from the distant past," Bog Queen follows an American forensic anthropologist named Agnes who's called to investigate a body found in a bog in northwest England, and her investigation leads her to discover surprising details about her own personal history. Vauhini Vara, Pulitzer Prize Finalist and author of The Immortal King Rao, praises Bog Queen as "An absolute astonishment," while author Kaliane Bradley says, "Bog Queen sparkles like unearthed treasure."

Anna North is the author of four novels: Bog Queen, Outlawed, America Pacifica, and The Life and Death of Sophie Stark. Published in 2021, Outlawed was a New York Times bestseller and Reese’s Book Club and Belletrist pick. In addition to her fiction writing, North is also a senior correspondent at Vox, covering American work and family life. She grew up in Los Angeles, graduated from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop in 2009, and now lives in Brooklyn.

Sarah E. Bond is an associate professor in the Department of History at the University of Iowa. She is interested in late Roman history, epigraphy, late antique law, Roman topography and GIS, Digital Humanities, and the socio-legal experience of ancient marginal peoples. She earned a PhD in History from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (2011) and obtained a BA in Classics and History with a minor in Classical Archaeology from the University of Virginia (2005). Her book, Trade and Taboo: Disreputable Professionals in the Roman Mediterranean, was published with the University of Michigan Press in 2016.
