Return from The Battlefield
The first two pipers from the legendary Battlefield Band, Duncan and Dougie will play a mix of tunes on their various pipes and maybe even some of their other instruments.
Duncan was the first piper with the Battlefield Band, joining them in 1979, and introducing the sound of the pipes into their sound.
A serious accident finished his Battlefield Band career in 1983, but thanks to the skill of surgeon to hand at the time saved his fingers and his piping career.
Returning to the family farm near Nigg, his piping extended into solo world awhile continuing in the folk tradition, after several spectacular performances in the Jig completions at the Northern Meeting Duncan won the Gold Medal in 1997.
From early days in Ian MacDonald’s innovative Neilston Pipe Band, Dougie joined the Battlefield band in 1984, adding the saxophone to his skills on the pipes, flute and whistles, until 1990.
After teaching at the National Piping Centre, Dougie was appointed as head of the National Centre of Excellence in Traditional Music at Plockton High School, until his retirement after 23 years. The list of Alumni’s under his stewardship is remarkable and strengthens the music of Scotland for years to come. He was inducted into Hands Up for Trad Services to Community Award in 2023.
