Back by popular demand, we're kicking off the new year with one of Cindi Kordell's ever-popular calligraphy classes. This one will likely fill quickly, so get your registration in early.

In this beginner’s calligraphy class, Cindi will introduce you to the “tools of the trade” and show you how to use them - and will provide the basic information you will need for your calligraphy experience.
You will learn the Foundational Hand, which will provide a solid understanding of letter forms and structure – necessary to start your journey into the Art of Beautiful Writing.
Cindi will provide you with all exemplars and guidelines, and she will demonstrate:
The Lower Case Roman Letters (minuscules)
Roman Capitals (majuscules)
She will demonstrate each letter of the alphabet and offer suggestions as you start to learn the structure and form of all of the letters.
She will go around and work with each student as they work on learning the formations of the letters.
She will bring some examples of her finished work, and encourage each student to use what they’ve learned to continue their personal calligraphy journey!
Everyone is welcome, regardless of skill level. You'll leave class with several studies you can be proud of.

When, where, and how much?
This class will be held on Saturday, January 31, 2026 at The Artists Hand Gallery and Espresso Bar, located at 732 Philadelphia Street, Indiana, PA.
Class is 10am to 4pm with a one-hour lunch break.
The cost is $60 for IAA Members and $75 for non-members.

You will need to bring....
Participants should bring a ruler, pencil, an eraser, tape, paper towels or wipes, as well as a container for water. Also, please remember to bring a lunch. We will break for an hour.
Our host, The Artists Hand, does have options for drinks and paninis, so consider having lunch there and enjoying the gallery during our break.

About Cindi Kordell:
Cindi Kordell resides in Indiana PA with her husband and has been a calligraphy enthusiast for most of her life. She first dabbled with pen, paper and ink as a teenager, and has since been drawn to learn as much as she can about this “art of beautiful writing”.She is a Penn State Graduate (1981- Dean’s List- B.S. Human Development) and she and her husband raised a lovely family and ran thriving businesses in Indiana PA for 26 years.
Since retirement a few years ago, Cindi has had the opportunity to take her love of letters to the next level. She is a member of the Calligraphy Guild of Pittsburgh, where she has taken several classes and workshops with master calligraphers.
She continues to diligently work to hone her skills in several calligraphy hands, and has come to have a personal preference for the pure and classic letter forms. She loves incorporating collage work (using upcycled scraps and papers) with her calligraphy as a means to further express her artistic message in a piece.
Cindi has also taken classes from internationally recognized calligraphers in more expressive calligraphy – using letters to make art. She has found this to be very enlightening and refreshing, and enjoys having more expressive calligraphy pieces as part of her portfolio.
In October 2025, Cindi spear-headed a Calligraphy Exhibit – titled “The Artful Letter”, at the Artists Hand Gallery in Indiana Pa. This exhibit included many works from members of the Calligraphy Guild Pittsburgh, and featured works from nationally known Master Calligraphers Myrna Rosen and Judy Melvin. Also featured in this exhibit were pieces from the Emerging Calligraphers of Indiana Pa.
Cindi started a Calligraphy Group in Indiana in 2024 – anyone that has taken her classes are welcomed to join this group – where they meet once a month to practice the hands that they learned in the classes that she taught. It has become a solid growing group in Indiana, and the participants are enthusiastic and have become quite skilled in developing the styles they have learned.
She teaches classes in a variety of calligraphy hands, does a vast amount of commission work, participates in countless Arts and Crafts Festivals, has her calligraphy displayed at the Artists Hand Gallery, has had her work in Calligraphy Guild Pittsburgh’s Show of Hands exhibit in Monroeville, Vandergrift Art Exhibit, has received an award in a juried art exhibit, and is an active board member and Secretary of the Indiana Art Association and an active member of the Calligraphy Guild Pittsburgh.
She hopes to continue to nurture and share her love of calligraphy for many years to come!
