Join us at the Hutchinson Art Center for Monthly Children’s Art Projects, led by artist and educator Beckie Vega!
These make-n-take art classes are an opportunity for children aged 6 through 12 to create their own work of art! Students will meet at the Art Center on Saturday, November 8th and be divided into two groups: Group A (1:00 to 2:30 PM) and Group B (3:00 to 4:30 PM), with each group covering different skills. Each group art class costs $8 per child.

The theme for November’s project is Koi Fish!
During the November classes, students will learn how to draw koi fish and create a watercolor koi fish painting using a watercolor resist technique (Group A) or a watercolor and pen technique (Group B). Both groups will utilize skills in drawing, linework, watercolor, shape, and space.
- For Group A, the instructor will first introduce koi fish and show picture examples of the fish. Their different colors and shapes will be noted. The instructor will show the example and briefly outline the process for creating the artwork.
Students will begin with drawing their koi fish in pencil. The instructor will take a step by step approach with the koi fish drawing, demonstrating how to begin with the basic shapes and add the fins, eyes, and color patches. The students will draw along with the instructor (though it’s okay if some do not completely follow along). Students will draw two fish swimming together. Students will be shown how to add details such as water ripples and lily pads.
After the koi fish and other details are drawn in pencil, students will lightly erase their pencil lines so they are still visible, but not dark. Students will then trace back over their original pencil lines with crayon. The process of watercolor resist will be explained, and students will be encouraged to outline, rather than fill in, their koi fish.
After the crayon outline is completed, students will paint over their drawing in watercolor. The watercolor will resist the parts of the drawing that are outlined in crayon.
- For Group B, the instructor will first introduce koi fish and show picture examples of the fish. Their different colors and shapes will be noted. The instructor will show the example and briefly outline the process for creating the artwork.
