Where do species live? This seemingly simple question is critical in biodiversity conservation. Species' occurrence records help scientists map populations, track trends, and make decisions. But what if the data is incomplete? Could the reliance on traditional collection methods lead to ineffective conservation decisions?

Join us for this full-day workshop to explore these questions and more. Visualize Alabama species data on the Half-Earth Project Map, a groundbreaking, data-driven tool developed by our partners at the Yale Center for Biodiversity and Global Change, then dig deeper into the data to uncover how species are protected in Alabama and evaluate how well biodiversity is monitored across species, space, and time. Finally, explore alternative methods for collecting species data, such as environmental DNA, and propose a plan to address gaps in existing data. The skills, strategies, and tools are designed to promote greater student autonomy, foster deep critical thinking, encourage team collaboration, and demonstrate how science and engineering can address local concerns while tackling global environmental challenges.
