More in Common- Challenging Division

Join UNISON for an evening of reflection, solidarity, and hope. This event invites audiences to see the world through the eyes of immigrants, asylum seekers, and marginalised groups, gaining insight into the challenges, struggles, and resilience of people whose experiences are often overlooked or simplified in mainstream narratives. 

Attendees will have the opportunity to explore the Holocaust Centre North (HCN) exhibition “Through Our Eyes”, which tells the story of 16 children and young people who survived Nazi persecution and later made new lives in the North of England. The exhibition is driven by survivor testimony (including filmed testimonies available on touchscreens), original artefacts (e.g. documents, photographs, an original prisoner uniform), and a reflective space.  

The evening will then continue with a screening of the award-winning documentary For Sama, a deeply personal story that follows Waad al-Kateab, a young Syrian woman, over five years of the Syrian conflict. The film tells her personal story of love, motherhood, and survival while documenting the devastating impact of war on civilians in Aleppo. Through this film, we aim to highlight the human stories behind the headlines and challenge the narratives that dehumanise asylum seekers and immigrants.
