Leon III (say it "Leon the Third") is a genre-bending duo consisting of long time collaborators Andy Stepanian and Mason Brent and a revolving cast of studio and touring friends. Many know Brent and Stepanian from their years in influential alt-country band, Wrinkle Neck Mules, or their prolific outdoor clothing brand, Howler Brothers.
As Leon III, the “duo” has released three richly layered studio albums produced by Mark Nevers (Silver Jews, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy) and a handful of live shows, singles and covers. They’ve played coveted stages such as Austin City Limits Music Festival and collaborated with an amazing range of artists including mythical dub reggae pioneer, Lee “Scratch” Perry.
Although often compared to Pink Floyd and Grateful Dead due to the expansive and interconnected nature of their albums, Leon III's music defies definitive placement into any box as it moves deftly between jammy psychedelia, slow burning folk-country and full-on blistering rock. At the root of it all is Stepanian’s songwriting - an impressionistic jigsaw puzzle rich with lyrical content and cathartic payoffs.
