"imUnsure" -- an interdisciplinary piano performance

Curated and performed by pianist Jixue Yang, imUnsure is an interdisciplinary performance blending piano, electronics, movement, and visuals.

The program features newly commissioned works by diasporic East Asian women composers and interdisciplinary artists for the Western piano. Exploring themes of cultural displacement, intergenerational trauma, and the search for authentic self-expression amid societal expectations, the concert stage becomes a space of recovery, resilience, and resistance.

Notes from Jixue:
As an East Asian woman in performance, I confront a persistent paradox: access to resources does not guarantee freedom of expression. Even in places that celebrate diversity, unconscious biases shape how my work is received. I find myself hypervisible as a statistic, yet muted as a voice.

Must I scream to be heard?
Who decides what freedom looks like?
Why are some expressions called “too political” only when they come from certain bodies?

When I speak differently, must my voice be filtered?
When you don’t understand me, do you choose to ignore?
Does being nice become a flaw only when it comes to women from the Sinosphere?

This project is deeply meaningful to me, and I want to reclaim voice and visibility for those caught between inherited patriarchy and Western projections, whose struggle for belonging often remains unseen.
