📚 Talk: "Born into AI: Navigating a Learning Revolution"
🎤 Speaker: Shelby Terral, M.S. is a community college psychology professor, PhD candidate at the University of Houston, and AI Safety Analyst whose research sits at the intersection of college access, AI literacy, and educational equity.
DESCRIPTION:
Kids are growing up with AI in their pockets, while most adults are still trying to figure out what it is, when to use it, and how worried to be. In Born into AI: Navigating a Learning Revolution, educator and researcher Shelby Terral pulls back the curtain on how students are actually using AI right now to write, study, and make sense of school, and what that means for how they learn, how confident they feel, and who gets left behind.
Professor Terral will share real stories from classrooms and homes, breaking down what “staying in charge of the thinking” looks like in practice, and showing why early habits around AI can shape how a whole generation learns and trusts itself. You will walk away with a clearer picture of where schools are lagging, what kids already know, and simple ways adults can model healthy use of AI without needing to be tech experts.
This talk is for anyone who cares about learning in an AI world, whether you are a parent, educator, student, or just AI-curious. Come for a grounded, research-informed, and very real conversation about the generation that will not remember a world before AI, and the adults who are trying to catch up without losing what really matters.

*** A CAUSE CLOSE TO MY HEART ***
Curiosity Brews was launched by our very first speaker, Bridgette Mongeon — sculptor and founder of Houston Women's Hiking Group, a community of 20,000+ hikers. Hiking has personally been a lifeline for me, and Bridgette is now working on something ambitious: two life-size bronze statues honoring Emma "Grandma Gatewood," the remarkable 67-year-old grandmother who in 1955 became the first woman to solo thru-hike the entire Appalachian Trail. To honor that connection, I'm donating 5% of net proceeds from every Curiosity Brews event to this tribute. If her story moves you too, you can contribute directly at
