A celestial event is occurring over India's -- and Bangalore's -- skies.
The majestic Orionid Meteor Shower. On October 20, 21, 22, 23, 2025.
Meteor Showers are yearly-recurring events which garner interest and attention not only from astronomical enthusiasts but even common populace, because they occur only few times a year.
And here we are, a dedicated, experienced, astronomy entity, who is inviting you to witness the spectacle with us. At our lovely dark sky, rural, campsites.
---------------------------------
Meteors are casually called as 'shooting stars' due to their appearance. They are particles of stone and dust which hit the atmosphere when the Earth traverses through and comes in contact with the debris from a passed-by comet's tail.
The Orionids originate from the famous Comet 1P/Halley or Halley's Comet, with a periodicity of every 76 years.
Every year, during these dates (of October) a stream of particles from Halley's Comet left-behind tail material is intercepted by the atmosphere, which results in magnificent 'celestial fireworks'. The streaks of meteors zip across from any part of the sky -- but tracing back their apparent paths, they appear to originate from the constellation of Orion, hence the name.
Orionid meteors dash at 65 kilometers per second. They produce rates of about 20 meteors per hour. They are fast-moving meteors, at times produce bright fireballs, and occasionally leave behind smoke trails called meteor 'trains'.
The advantage playing out this time is, during October 20-23 2025, the absence of Moon-light, thereby rendering the night sky dark for the whole night, if the clouds do not intervene. A good viewing could be expected for this year!
Photographers are recommended to bring their own DSLR cameras and tripods to capture pictures of the meteors -- especially in a dark night sky with the Milky Way band visible.
Observers can even bringing along their own binoculars -- of any specification -- will aid in generally watching the beautiful night sky and its celestial splendours.
---------------------------------
ADDITIONALLY...
As we are an Astronomy Campsite -- not for viewing the meteor shower, which can only be viewed with the bare eyes, but alongside for observing various celestial objects through the night -- we possess with us an 8-inch Dobsonian, a 10-inch Go-To on Equatorial Mount, a 25x100 big Binocular, for observing and imaging. They offer excellent magnified views of the night sky in a broad range of magnifications -- widest being the big binocular to the narrowest being the telescopes.
We witness this feast-to-the-eyes sight from the silent, serene, empty, rustic -- nocturnal --environment, near the edge of a large forest of the Cauvery River belt.
