Seminar by Dr. Yixiao ZHOU (University of Oslo)

Over the past three decades, 3D radiative-hydrodynamical simulations of stellar surface convection have revolutionized the field of solar and stellar physics, reshaping our understanding of the photospheres and atmospheres of low-mass stars. In this talk, I will introduce the basic properties of these 3D surface convection models and review how they have provided unique insights into the dynamics of stellar surfaces — for example, refining the chemical composition of the Sun, contributing to the archeology of the Milky Way and the detection of exoplanets. I will also highlight recent progress in applying 3D simulations to asteroseismology (the study of stellar interiors through their oscillations) and to stellar evolution modeling, both enabling more accurate determinations of fundamental stellar parameters.
