This month we'll shine the spotlight on a topic often left aside in sustainability discussions: DEI and all that encompasses of diversity, equity and inclusion. With Benita Chick as our guide, we'll explore the connection between sustainability and diversity, why it is so important, and what's the current challenges and opportunities in Hong Kong.
Join us from 6.45pm at Cafe8! Entry is free, but please support our generous venue sponsor Cafe8 by purchasing at least one drink per person.
Benita Chick's bio:
I am a passionate advocate for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DE&I) with primary interest in diversity in both marine life and the human world. With a wide range of skills including teaching, facilitation, stakeholder engagement and curriculum design, I host corporate/ organisational training on DE&I and curate experiential learning on the SDGs to promote public awareness. My multidisciplinary academic and work experience (research, psychology, education, and experiential learning) lends a unique perspective to my corporate/ organisational training.
A non-binary, Chinese lesbian with bipolar disorder and with broad experience in community outreach and environmental education targeting universities, NGOs and think-tanks, I took the leap to start my own social enterprise Encompass HK in 2018 to further the mission of advocating for SDGs and DE&I. As I value blending fun with learning, I curate unique and fun-filled experiential learning opportunities about the SDGs for the public, e.g. using beer tasting, chocolate and hosting treasure hunts to discuss gender stereotypes, fair trade and inclusion concepts respectively.
I host DE&I workshops where I adopt an intersectional approach in discussing DE&I. The workshops offer a unique perspective towards DE&I as I draw on my international, cross-cultural experience of having lived in the US, Australia, Indonesia and Mexico. My DE&I workshops target both local and global audiences.
I am committed to community outreach and assume various other professional roles to further engage the public in issues related to the SDGs and DE&I. For example, I regularly serve as a guest speaker at various schools and a part-time lecturer at the University of Hong Kong and the Chinese University of Hong Kong, where I share with local communities my first-hand collaborative experience and advocacy work on social causes. My passion for community engagement also drives me to serve as a board member of several NGOs and to enhance the social impact of my advocacy work.
