Prairie Program: Cabbages & Caissons

HHS 1982 alumna Kate Brewster (aka Karen Klamm) will give a presentation at the museum on Saturday, October 26, at 2 p.m. She will talk about her book Cabbages and Caissons, based on the Civil War diary written by 20-year-old Lizzie Anderson. In between Lizzie's entries, Kate has added relevant facts and interesting historical tidbits. And although the diary was written from 1860 to 1865, this technically isn't a Civil War book. It's a book about day-to-day life during a pivotal moment in our nation's history. Stories of courage, conflict, and everyday life that shaped the region and the country.

Kate is a retired library director based in Knoxville, Tennessee, with more than three decades of experience in research, archival management, and public education. Kate teaches genealogy and writing workshops where she brings history and writing to life for fellow lifelong learners. Her love of storytelling is matched only by her devotion to her 14-year-old triplet grandchildren—two cheerleaders and a basketball player—whose games and milestones she never misses. Whether she’s researching family histories, crafting a new workshop, or cheering from the bleachers, Kate brings heart, curiosity, and a deep commitment to preserving the voices of her community.
