Step into the shadows of the past at the Hobart Art Theater, a place where history and hauntings collide. Built in 1941, it stands on the very ground once occupied by the Hobart House, a hotel that, in the late 1800s, doubled as a makeshift hospital during outbreaks. The echoes of suffering and death linger, making it a hotbed for paranormal activity.
For me, the connection is personal. My great-great-grandfather, Charles Kietzman, once owned the Hobart House. A kind man who refused to turn families out during the Great Depression, he lost everything. Perhaps his benevolent spirit—or a more tragic echo of his loss—still walks the halls.
The theater is alive with stories of spectral encounters, and we've gathered our own chilling evidence. Patrons have seen the shadowy figure of a woman in the back row, eternally watching over the cinema. Down in the chilling cement block basement, a relic of the original hotel, a palpable presence lingers. During our investigation with the Indiana Ghost Trackers, we felt a sudden drop in temperature and the unsettling sensation of being watched. One of our team members even felt a gentle, disembodied touch on her arm—a touch that sent a shiver down her spine. On one particularly memorable night, with our entire group in the dressing room below the stage, we all heard the distinct sound of footsteps pacing directly above us—a performance for a ghostly audience of one.
Our past investigations have yielded some of the most compelling evidence we've ever captured. We've recorded numerous EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena), capturing the faint whispers of those who remain. We've also had great success with the spirit box, a device that scans radio frequencies to allow spirits to communicate. On one occasion, a disembodied voice clearly spoke the name of the previous owner, leaving us with no doubt as to who we were communicating with. We've also had incredible results using the Estes Method, an advanced technique where one investigator wears noise-canceling headphones and a blindfold while holding the spirit box. By verbally repeating what they hear, they can receive clear, uninterrupted messages from the other side.
The most compelling visual evidence, however, comes from a glowing orb captured on video, silently floating up the aisle as if searching for something lost to time. Another witness saw a large ball of light drift across the theater before vanishing into a wall mural, a ghostly lantern searching for a home.
