Xin mời các bạn đăng ký tham gia buổi đọc và thảo luận cùng giáo sư Pamela N. Corey về tiểu luận “The (Calli)graphic Regimes of Contemporary Vietnamese Art” (tạm dịch “Hệ thống (thư)-đồ hoạ của Nghệ thuật Đương đại Việt Nam”, được đăng lần đầu tên trang Artmargins vào năm 2024.
Ở Hà Nội vào những năm 1990 nhiều nghệ sĩ mà trong đó có Vũ Dân Tân (1946-2009), Trương Tân (sn.1963) và Nguyễn Văn Cường (sn. 1973) xem văn bản như là phần thiết yếu đối với lô-gíc của hình ảnh. Tôi xem xét những thử nghiệm nghệ thuật này như một phần không thể tách tời với cái mà người ta vẫn thường ngợi ca là sự xuất hiện của nghệ thuật đương đại tại Việt Nam gắn liền với những hiệu ứng sơ khởi của toàn cầu hoá và sự thúc đẩy cho những truy vấn về tính cá nhân một cách tự do sau bốn mươi năm noi theo hiện thực xã hội chủ nghĩa.
Tuy nhiên, tôi cũng đề xuất về tầm quan trọng của nơi chốn đối với các thực hành này, cụ thể là hệ thống thư hoạ hậu chủ nghĩa xã hội trong môi trường đô thị với dấu vết của chữ khắc cổ, sự xuất hiện tràn lan của biển hiệu thương mại, và sự hiện diện khắp nơi của tranh cổ động công cộng tiếp tục phủ lên diện mạo của các thành phố ngày nay. Các tác phẩm được nhắc đến trong tiểu luận này mang đến những sự hiểu mới về nghệ thuật, cụ thể là trong việc sử dụng đường nét và chữ viết để đặt biểu đạt nghệ thuật như một phần, nhưng cũng là để tách rời khỏi những bề mặt đô thị và chất liệu đồ hoạ mà trên và trong đó những hành động khác thường được thực hiện. Vì lẽ đó, hệ thống thư pháp-đồ hoạ đánh dấu một bước chuyển khác lạ trong việc hiểu về cái gì có thể được xem là nghệ thuật ở Việt Nam trong thập kỷ 90.

Pamela N. Corey là phó giáo sư lịch sử nghệ thuật thuộc chương trình Nghiên cứu Nghệ thuật và Truyền thông tại Trường Đại học Fulbright Việt Nam, Tp. Hồ Chí Minh. Trọng tâm nghiên cứu và giảng dạy của cô là lịch sử nghệ thuật hiện đại và đương đại, tập trung vào Đông Nam Á trong bối cảnh liên quốc gia châu Á và toàn cầu. Trước khi gia nhập trường Đại học Fulbright Việt Nam vào năm 2021, cô từng là trợ lý giáo sư thuộc khoa Lịch sử Nghệ thuật & Khảo cổ tại Trường SOAS, Đại học London. Pamela là tác giả của cuốn sách The City in Time: Contemporary Art and Urban Form in Vietnam and Cambodia (University of Washington Press, 2021), biên tập khách mời của “Voice as Form,” số đặc biệt của tập san khoa học về nghệ thuật Oxford Art Journal (2020), và “On Modern and Contemporary Cambodian Art and Aesthetics,” số đặc biệt của tập san khoa học nghiên cứu về Khmer Udaya, Journal of Khmer Studies (2014).

A. Farm is excited to host a reading and discussion with professor Pamela N. Corey’s essay “The (Calli)graphic Regimes of Contemporary Vietnamese Art”, which was originally published on Artmargins in 2024.
“In 1990s Hanoi, Vietnam, many contemporary artists navigated the written form as crucial to the logic of the pictorial field. These included Vũ Dân Tân (1946-2009), Trương Tân (b. 1963), and Nguyễn Văn Cường (b. 1973), among others. I examine these artistic experiments as integral to what many have hailed as the emergence of contemporary art in Vietnam, linked to the early effects of globalization and the impetus to freely engage with questions of selfhood following over forty years of a socialist realist mandate. However, I also suggest the significance of site to these practices, in particular the postsocialist graphic regime of the urban environment, with its traces of historical inscriptions, influx of commercial signage, and ubiquitous public propaganda posters that continue to coat the surfaces of cities today. The artworks discussed in this essay drove new understandings of art, particularly in the use of line and text to situate artistic expression as part of but also apart from the urban surfaces and graphic materials on and in which such unorthodox actions were enacted. As such, the (calli)graphic regime marked a radical shift in perceptions of what could be art in 1990s Vietnam.”

Pamela N. Corey is an associate professor of art history in the Art and Media Studies program at Fulbright University Vietnam in Ho Chi Minh City. She researches and teaches modern and contemporary art history, focusing on Southeast Asia within broader transnational Asian and global contexts. Prior to joining Fulbright University Vietnam in 2021, she was an assistant professor in the History of Art & Archaeology department at SOAS University of London. She is the author of The City in Time: Contemporary Art and Urban Form in Vietnam and Cambodia (University of Washington Press, 2021), guest co-editor of “Voice as Form,” a special issue of Oxford Art Journal (2020) and “On Modern and Contemporary Cambodian Art and Aesthetics,” a special issue of Udaya, Journal of Khmer Studies (2014).
