Step Inside Ulster’s Linen Heritage.
A rare opportunity to experience Ireland’s linen story where it all began, in a working flax mill powered by the River Lagan.
Step inside the last remaining working flax mill in Ulster, where the hum of heritage still echoes through every beam and bolt. Run by a family with over 200 years of flax-growing and processing history, this mill is a living monument to Ireland’s world-renowned linen industry.
Explore the full flax-to-fibre journey with live demonstrations of retting, breaking, scutching, and heckling, the traditional methods once used across Ulster to produce the finest linen in the world. See original tools and heritage machinery in action, and walk in the footsteps of generations of skilled workers who made linen not just a trade, but a way of life.
Dromore and the wider Lagan Valley were once part of a vast network of mills, scutchers, bleachers, spinners and weavers, a legacy that shaped the landscape, economy, and identity of this place. This mill is one of the last physical links to that proud past.
Today, it stands not only as a heritage site, but as a source of inspiration for the future, showing how traditional knowledge, rooted in the land, can play a role in building a more sustainable, regenerative textile economy.
Come experience the craft, culture, and care that made Irish linen legendary.
