On Sunday, October 5, we’re delighted to announce that we’ll be teaming up with People for Palmer Park, Detroit Parks Coalition and Casamara Club to bring Shigeto to the newly-minted Palmer Park bandshell!
Detroit-based drummer, electronic music producer, label head, DJ and WDET radio host, Shigeto (@__shigeto) is a pillar of Detroit’s diverse music scene. A recording artist for over 15 years on Ghostly International, Shigeto released his 5th full-length album in the fall of 2024, Cherry Blossom Baby. Aside from a headlining spot at the Movement Music Festival this spring, Shigeto’s latest ensemble hasn’t performed as such to the Detroit community, until now! Featuring Marcus Elliot (@marcus.elliot) on saxophone, Ian Fink (@finkianfink) on keys, Tim Shellabarger (@_tshella) on bass, Dez Andrés (@dezandresmahogani) on percussion, KESSWA (@kesswa_) on vocals, and Shigeto, of course, on drums and electronics, Cherry Blossom Baby lands in Palmer Park, 1 year after its official release.
The re-opening of the bandshell is a momentous event in Detroit, having been saved from demolition on the site of the old state fairgrounds near 8 Mile and John R. Many world-renowned artists greeted Detroit from that stage over the years—including Ray Charles, Johnny Cash, Al Green and the Beach Boys to name just a few. Now in its new home, we’re honored to be a part of the stage’s revival in one of Detroit’s magnificent green spaces.
The concert will be interluded before-and-after with selections from 2 of Detroit’s most highly-esteemed DJs, Saylem Celeste (@saylemceleste) and Turtle Bugg (@tortuga_minor). Bring your own blanket or chairs. Beer and wine will be available as well as a range of non-alcoholic botanical sodas from Detroit soda-maker Casamara Club (@casamaraclub). Our friends from Pink Flamingo (@pinkflamingodetroit) will also be popping up, serving up nourishing dishes from their kitchen. Please join us for this free, all-ages concert and very special occasion on Sunday, October 5 from 4-7pm.
