The Allendale Turnpike

Road travel in the East Allen dale in the 1820s was revolutionised by the construction of a new road from Hexham to Allenheads; a faster, broader road that you could use by paying a toll.

With ten toll cottages controlling the road, the ‘Allendale Turnpike Trust’ only lasted from 1826 to 1875 but its traces in the landscape endure to the present day. Join Alastair Robertson as he tells the story of the life, times and people of the Allendale Turnpike.
