Hermosa Beach’s Iconic Lighthouse Cafe’ will host a FREE special celebration and show to mark the release of The Legends of Surf Guitar - a previously unreleased live recording captured at The Lighthouse on April 1, 1995. Presented by the Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce, Oglio Records, and The Lighthouse, the celebration will feature local surf band The Royal Rats.
The album, released in July on Oglio Records, documents an extraordinary night when pioneers of the 1960s surf sound joined forces with leaders from the genre’s revival era for a rare all-star gathering in Hermosa Beach. Icons including The Chantays, The Surfaris, and Dave Allan & the Arrows shared the stage with revival-era standouts like Jon & The Nightriders and The Surf Raiders. Backed by a powerhouse ensemble featuring Don Murray, Pete Curry, and John Blair - plus a guest appearance by Elliot Easton of The Cars - the performance was recorded but kept in the vaults for three decades. In attendance will be the album's engineer, the Grammy-winning Mark Linett, best known for his longtime work with Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys.
This release also marks the first official live recording ever issued by The Chantays, whose 1963 "Pipeline" remains one of the most famous surf guitar tracks in history.
The Legends of Surf Guitar - Live at The Lighthouse has received recognition nationally since its release in July, debuting on the Billboard Top Compilation Albums chart - a rare accomplishment for a surf guitar record.
Copies of the album and CDs will be available for purchase that night.
