VAN DJANGO-September 13
Imagine yourself in a 1930s Paris café on a warm fall evening, listening to the exuberant swing of the Quintet of the Hot Club of France. While Quadra Concerts doesn’t have a time machine, we do have the next best thing—Van Django, Canada’s premier gypsy jazz quartet, live in concert on September 13th.
This acoustic string ensemble features four of Canada’s most talented and eclectic musicians: violinist Cameron Wilson, guitarist Budge Schachte, guitarist/cellist Finn Manniche, and bassist Brent Gubbels.
Van Django’s music is rooted in the gypsy jazz traditions of 1930s Paris, but their performances soar far beyond—full of dazzling improvisation, driving rhythms, boundless creativity, and unexpected mash-ups that delight audiences everywhere. Since forming in 1998, they’ve toured extensively across Canada, the US, Europe, and China, with repeat appearances at Djangofest Northwest (2008–2016) and collaborations with the Vancouver and Victoria Symphony Orchestras. Their four albums—Tiptoe Trip, Waltz in the Shape of a Tree, Hotel Europe, and the holiday favourite Cool Yule—receive regular airplay on CBC, NPR, RDI, and Lyric FM in Ireland.
Meet the musicians:
Cameron Wilson – Composer, arranger, and virtuosic violinist often compared to the legendary Stéphane Grappelli for his inventiveness, tone, and artistry.
Budge Schachte – Acclaimed guitarist, composer, and arranger, with numerous film soundtrack credits and performances alongside a “who’s who” of international artists.
Finn Manniche – A versatile guitarist and cellist whose credits span from chamber ensembles to jazz, performing with groups like the Armadillo String Quartet, the Jazzmanian Devils, and The Paperboys.
Brent Gubbels – A veteran bassist who has worked with Gypsalero, Rumba Calzada, John Reischman, and many more, and appears on recordings by multiple Juno winners and nominees.
Former Djangofest director Nick Lehr put it best:
“A standout act. Attending a Van Django concert is the most fun you can have sitting down with your clothes on.”
