About the event

Connect to the Canyon
This October is Government Canyon's 20th Anniversary month, and we've scheduled series of activities to celebrate! This weekend, we're using art to connect with our natural and cultural history.

What does a natural space like Government Canyon mean to you? Connect to the Canyon with mindful observations recorded in a free GCSNA journal (limited copies available).

In this special anniversary edition of our Nature Journaling activity, we'll explore some techniques for improving memory, expressing creativity, building scientific skills, and increasing your connection to nature. Journaling regularly can do all this and more. We’ll help you get started with quality colored pencils, a variety of journaling prompts, and a non-judgmental, sharing atmosphere.

Who Is Invited:

This activity is open to all ages and includes both a seated activity and a (very) short hike. Minors must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. No pets please.

This is a public program intended for individuals or families. If you would like to bring a group for a program at Government Canyon, please contact the Park Interpreter at TGlzYSAhIENvbGUgfCB0cHdkICEgdGV4YXMgISBnb3Y= to schedule at a different time.

Where to Meet:

Park in Lot A or B and meet at the Gallery at the Visitor Center. After an introduction, we will seek journaling locations along the trail. There is an accessible restroom nearby.

How to Prepare:

Registration is NOT required, but the program is limited to the first 20 people to check in at the Gallery. Though the activity is free, entrance fees to the Natural Area do apply. We often fill to capacity. To ensure entrance and save time at the Fee Booth, please pre-purchase and print out a day pass. Day passes can be reserved beginning one month before the date of your visit.

We will provide colored pencils and journals, but you will need to bring a blanket or portable chair to sit on while journaling. You are welcome to bring your own art supplies if you’d like.

Dress for hiking outdoors. Comfortable shoes, sunscreen, bug spray and a hat are recommended. Bring at least 1 liter of water per person.

If ADA assistance is required, please request modifications by emailing YWNjZXNzaWJpbGl0eSB8IHRwd2QgISB0ZXhhcyAhIGdvdg== at least 2 weeks in advance.

Cancellation:

This program is weather-dependent and subject to cancellation. Check trail conditions by calling GCSNA's main office at 210-688-9055, or go to the GCSNA webpage, Instagram, or Facebook.
