About the event

Explore Places to Experience our Cultural History: The National Park System Presentation
Join us on Friday, November 7th at 5:30pm at MAM Artworks Studio / Paint Havana for a special presentation by Illinois Humanities Road Scholar Dr. Norman Moline.

The role of the National Park Service (NPS) in protecting spectacular features is well known. Yet, the NPS also strives to preserve sites that celebrate the cultural history of Illinois, helping to make "history come alive." These sites include National Monuments, Trails, Heritage Areas, 88 National Historic Landmarks, and nearly 2,000 locations on the National Register of Historic Places, with some in every county. This presentation will highlight a few key sites across the state and this central Illinois region and then focus on the immediate Havana area.

Dr. Moline hopes listeners can recognize the cultural history in our culture landscape and then visit these significant places. He presents this program as a tribute to the NPS and to the citizens who worked diligently to gain NPS recognition for these sites.

Norman Moline, PhD is Professor Emeritus at Augustana College where he had a distinguished career as an educator. Always bringing enthusiasm and good illustrations to his presentations, Dr. Moline wants listeners to not only learn the facts and importance of the topic at hand, but also become inspired to do more studies on their own about it. Dr. Moline consistently has connected his academic interests in the environment, urban planning and historic preservation with involvement in community and state organizations.

This program is sponsored by the Illinois Humanities and presented in partnership with the Mason County Arts Council, the Havana Museum and Cultural Center and MAM Artworks/Paint Havana.
