Zoe will be talking about how the Public Art commission Beneath the Waves for Brighton Hospital in 2020 led to a practice-based PhD in Photography and Seafaring funded by the National Maritime Museum. She will discuss both the opportunities and challenges that come with working with a National Museum and the NHS, showing some of the resulting work.
For her PhD project, Zoe has spent time at the Panama Canal and Tilbury Docks, and will be doing several journeys aboard containerships and tankers. Ninety percent of the world’s goods are shipped by sea, but the people who work onboard these colossal vessels are seldom considered. This project is producing new visual interpretations of maritime spaces and seafaring lives in the contemporary shipping industry, informed and inspired by museum archives.
Zoe Childerley is a senior lecturer at the University of Brighton. She is interested in how the landscape shapes society, how “place” is constituted, deconstructed, augmented, discussed, experienced. This has led to books and exhibitions about the English-Scottish border, California's Mojave Desert, the Huerfano valley in Colorado, Wales and the South coast of England.
