Harvey Internment Memorial Shrine and Detention Cells Self Guided Tour

Official Opening – Be one of the first to view the new exhibition at the Harvey Internment Camp Memorial Shrine and the newly opened Harvey Internment Camp & Army Detention Cells 1942.
For the first time since the Detention Cells were built in 1942, two cells are now open to the public, featuring interpretive information that explains their history and how the 3rd Australian Army Corps utilised the Internment Camp site as a training school for soldiers during World War II.

Start your tour at the Shrine, believed to be Australia’s only roadside shrine. This State Heritage Listed site is a memorial to the Italians who were interned in Harvey during WWI. It also provides information on the German prisoners who spent time at Camp No. 11 Harvey.

Sit in remembrance and contemplation, or explore exhibits that tell the story of the Internment Camp and Shrine.

Continue your walk past the Shrine Fountain ‘Fontana 2000’, and along The Shrine Walk.

You will pass the Harvey North Irrigation Channel and Garry’s Crossing, and the Internment Camp Ablution Block Foundations.

Finish with a visit to the Detention Cells.
