Hailed as “the punk rockers of chamber music” and “alt chamber titans,” the Upton Trio is a modern classical group that blends the avant-garde and the timeless. The Trio was initially formed to perform and teach for educational outreach efforts in Kershaw County public schools, and in the decades since, they have established themselves as a major voice bringing classical music into the modern age. Their album “These Are Different Times” was described as “a sprawling and enthralling work of imagination” (The State). Alongside landmarks of the major classical repertoire, the Upton Trio continues to premiere and celebrate works by living artists, including the group’s violinist and concertmaster of the SC Philharmonic, Mary Lee Taylor Kinosian.
This program will open with Hungarian composer Béla Bartók’s Romanian Folk Dances, Sz. 56. The first half of the concert will continue with Kinosian’s The Four Elements Suite, each movement of which evokes one of the four classical elements that make up matter. After a brief intermission, the concert will conclude with Felix Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio in C minor, Op. 66.
