Skip the shopping and the crowds and instead join us on Black Friday for a hike! We will walk on the Ice Age Trail and other park trails in the Kettle Moraine State Forest’s Pike Lake Unit. This hike is being held as part of REI's #OptOutside campaign to get more people outdoors during the holidays. No gun deer hunting is allowed in the park, so this is a safe place to hike during the annual hunt.
LOCATION: The hike will start from the amphitheater just north of the beach parking lot at the Pike Lake Unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest in Hartford. A Wisconsin state park sticker is required. Click here for driving directions. Click here for a park map. Watch for yellow “Ice Age Trail Event” signs.
HIKE DESCRIPTION: A longer 4.6 mile hike along the blue trail with significant ups and downs will burn off the calories you consumed on Thanksgiving. Enjoy panoramic views of Pike Lake and the surrounding countryside from the top of Powder Hill. The upper section of the blue trail includes an astronomy trail that will give you a true scale view of our solar system. A shorter loop hike of approximately 2.0 miles on the green trail will also be offered if there is interest.
WHAT TO BRING: Wear comfortable hiking boots and dress appropriately for the weather. Bring water, sunscreen, and your camera. Well-behaved, leashed dogs are welcome on this hike and in the park.
HIKE LEADERS: Mark Muellenbach, Jeremy Vechinski
