Hatha Yoga Retreat
Introduction to Shadow Yoga
The prelude forms for yogasana are made up of various karanas (movement forms, lit. causes) and suryanamaskars (flowing sequences of positions know as sun salutations.)
These forms are designed to strengthen the bones and blood and to remove obstructions in the gross physical structure, whilst simultaneously cultivating sensitivity of mind and body, thus revealing the Soul.
The preludes are the first step towards the Nrtta Sadhana (the pure dance of Shiva) and other more advanced practices imparted within the Shadow Yoga school.
For those Ashram students practicing Himalayan Meditation or any other seated meditative activity, a Hatha Yoga practice will enable one to sit with greater ease and sensitivity, free from distraction of bodily discomfort.
Students who find seated meditation difficult will benefit from the embodied nature of the practice.
What is it about?
This is the next step along the path of Hatha Yoga for Ashram students who have attended the Soul Retreat and is also suitable for those new to the practice and Ashram (and have not attended a Soul Retreat) who are wishing to pursue to the path of Hatha Yoga, in alignment with the Shadow Yoga school.
The founder and director of the Shadow Yoga school is Sundernath (Shandor Remete) who is an initiate in the Nath Sampradaya in Nepal.
Our teacher for the retreat is David Wegman, Kailash Ashram’s founder and a student of Sundernath who has practised in the Shadow Yoga school for 15 years.
The focus of this retreat is solely on Hatha Yoga and there will be no other sadhana or practices engaged with during the retreat.
Each day you will participate in 2 x 2 hour workshops, incorporating discourse, questions and answers and guidance in your physical practice.
The remaining time throughout the day is provided for students to reflect, rest and enjoy the Ashram and surrounds. The Hatha Yoga retreat is an open camp and students are free to explore the Grampians if there is the wish.
Sadhana Imparted
During the retreat we will focus upon introducing the Nrtta Sadhana, the pure dance of Shiva which incorporates flowing movements (karana) and seated positions (asana). We will be sharing teachings from the Taranyali Trida Dhyanam (Three fold Meditations of the Thunder Dragon,) in particular the Taranyali Krantam.
From Shadow Yoga; "The first stage, Taranyali Krantam, the Emergence of the Thunder Dragon, is a full-practice format involving standing, seated, and meditative activities. You will be able to follow, at your own pace, the individual karanas and asanas which are fully instructed, and review them until they become a flowing meditation."
Who is it for?
This retreat is shared at the open level.
All yoga practitioners are welcome regardless of experience level.
Those with significant physical restrictions are advised to consult their medical professional prior to attendance.
