Tinifok CHamoru is the weaving of CHamoru people. Weaving has been part of CHamoru culture since time immemorial. It is an important and useful practice that connects the practitioner to the experiences, knowledge and wisdom of the taotaomo'na or ancestors of the Marianas. Join us this Mes CHamoru for an exciting workshop led by generational weaver and cultural practitioner Señora Martha Tenorio! Her many years of experience learning weaving from her mother and grandparents and elders makers her the perfect host for this workshop.
Students will meet at the Guam Green Growth Circular Economy Makerspace for the workshop. All materials will be provided. Detailed instruction will follow, and all students will get to take their own handmade henton ulu with roses (coconut rose flower crown) home with them!
Martha Tenorio is an Indigenous Chamorro fiber artist. Her art seeks to celebrate the legacy of the Chamorro people who utilized the environment for both sustainability and art. She is from the village of Talofofo. She first started weaving from the early age of six, having been surrounded by skillful weavers, like her mother, Maria Tudela Tenorio, and grandparents, Lucia Castro Tenorio and Leonardo Campos Tenorio. She is knowledgeable in all the traditional coconut leaf weavings, from katupats, to tuhong (hats), and various guagua' (baskets) stlyes, as well as in all other decorative woven items. She is a retired teacher with the Department of Education, and was a weaving resource teacher for CHamoru Studies and Special Projects Division. She taught all around the island, teaching students during their CHamoru classes how to weave according to their grade level. She also started a program called “Famagu’on Titifok” which was a weaving program brought to all the villages in order to give free weaving lessons to anyone interested in learning, most especially for children. She currently teaches Chamoru arts & Practices at the University of Guam, and represented Guam at the 2024 Festival of the Pacific Arts in Hawaii as a weaving delegate.
