DWCSC November Meeting: Defending Public Education

On Tuesday, November 11, as our nation honors the veterans who have fought and sacrificed to defend our democracy, we gather to protect one of its most vital pillars: public education. Join the Democratic Women’s Club of Sarasota County for a powerful community meeting featuring School Board Member Liz Barker and SEE Alliance Executive Director Zander Moricz as we confront the growing threat of for-profit charter takeovers.

Liz Barker, a former school psychologist, mother of four, and the woman who unseated incumbent Karen Rose in a historic upset, will share an inside look at what’s happening in Sarasota schools, from proposed closures to the looming “Schools of Hope” corporate invasion. In a blatant and stunning violation of our democratic rights, Rose has been reinserted onto the School Board, underscoring just how high the stakes are for our community.

This Veterans Day, as for-profit charter corporations gain the power to seize public school campuses, Sarasota once again stands on the front lines. Our veterans fought for the freedoms that make democracy possible. Now, it’s our turn to defend the institutions that keep it alive. We must keep showing up, speaking out, and sending a clear message: we will not be silenced.
