✨ October Spotlight: Keeping Abreast Foundation ✨
Founded In 2002, the Krewe du YaYas were one of the first Mardi Gras krewe’s in our area dedicated to a mission of philanthropy. Although our focus has shifted over the years, the krewe decided it was time to establish a non-profit organization. In 2010, The Keeping Abreast Foundation was formed. While our krewe and foundation are in essence two distinct entities, we are sister organizations that collaborate toward a shared mission.
We offer a range of services, including our Breast Health Imaging and Services Program as well as our Breast Cancer Assistance Program (referred to as BCAP). We do not directly provide hands-on services; rather, we serve as a funding resource for our community partners. Eligibility for imaging and tattooing services is established by our partner organizations. Our present partners: Baldwin Health, The Women’s Group, and Pensacola PMU.
BREAST HEALTH IMAGING: We pay for screening mammograms, diagnostic mammograms and ultrasounds, breast MRI’s, and needle guided biopsies.
Other programs: Areola and eyebrow tattoos
We are in the formative stages of a new partnership with a 3D Ultrasound Clinic that utilizes ABUS (Automatic Breast Ultrasound). AND COMING soon… we are presently in the planning stages to sponsor a mammography bus in our community.
BCAP: Our grant program requires an application and covers expenses not paid by insurance. We try to think outside the box and have paid for things like gas money to appts, utilities, rent/ housing payments, devices to alert EMS if they have fallen, lymphedema sleeves, and sadly, funerals. Decisions are made in 3-5 days. Our organization recognizes that it is hard to ask for money, and we have learned that as a result a large number of these applicants needed the assistance long before they asked for help.
We all know of people who need help. If you know of an individual who needs assistance, please direct them to our website, specifically to our programs tab. Our mammography screening program page lists our providers and all the contact information for each provider. The BCAP tab has a downloadable application to apply for a grant. Applicants can either snail mail it back or email it to the address on the site.
