Primarily a comedy of manners, Oliver Goldsmith’s She Stoops to Conquer makes hay of the urban/rural and class divides in England in the 1700s. This production has transported the action to the American Midwest in the early 1900s.

Mr. Hardcastle plans to have his daughter, Kate, marry his friend’s son, but she finds the young man, Marlow, extremely reserved with women of his own class but shockingly forward with others. As Kate finds herself drawn to one side of Marlow, her cousin, Constance Neville, seeks to escape an impending marriage to the brash and mischievous Tony Lumpkin by running away with Marlow’s friend Hastings. All the while, Mrs. Hastings is trying to retain possession of Constance’s inheritance of jewels. Who will find their happy endings and which mistakes of the night will be forgiven?
Running time: approximately 2 hours, 15 minutes with one 15-minute intermission. This production is Readers Theatre style, in which cast members have their scripts. Sets and costuming are minimal. It’s a fun and relaxed night at the theatre!
