The Evolution of Electronic Musical Instruments
Percussion instruments are over 25,000 years old; stringed instruments have been around over 15,000 years; keyboard instruments are relative newcomers at roughly 700 years of age. By contrast, instruments that use electricity are barely 150 years old. Is the evolution of electronic instruments still continuing, has it stopped, or is it actually regressing? Are there any interesting qualities of early electronic instruments that’ve we’re in danger of losing? Chris Meyer will take us on a light-hearted, deeply opinionated, historically fascinating romp through recent history, including music created by the earliest electronic instruments. He will then give a tour of and perform on his own highly personalized hybrid electronic music system.
Chris Meyer has led three lives in the electronic music industry: as a designer of instruments, including creating Vector Synthesis and earning a MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) Lifetime Achievement Award; teaching music synthesis through numerous magazine articles, online courses, the highly-regarded book Patch & Tweak, and his website LearningModular.com; and now composing and performing his own unique version of emotional, cinematic electronic music under the name Alias Zone (AliasZone.com).
