Final Mission: Remembering the B-52 Crash on Elephant Mountain
On a bitter January day in 1963, a B-52 bomber crashed into Elephant Mountain during a Cold War training flight. Seven men aboard were lost. Two survived in brutal, subzero conditions. It’s a story that still echoes through our community.
Join us Thursday, August 28 at 4:00 PM at the Center for Moosehead History (6 Lakeview Street) for a special presentation by Dr. Joseph Wax, author of Final Mission: The North Woods. Dr. Wax spent over a year speaking with families of the crew and uncovering the personal stories behind the crash—stories of courage, heartbreak, and resilience.
As part of the event, visitors will have the rare chance to view two original ejection seats from the B-52, now on display at the Center. These powerful artifacts are reminders of what happened that day and how deeply it shaped Greenville’s connection to the crash.
Books will be available for purchase, and Dr. Wax will be signing copies after the talk.
This is more than a history talk—it’s a chance to honor the crew, reflect on a defining moment in Moosehead’s past, and connect with a story that still matters.
