Jim Malcolm - Formerly the lead singer of the award-winning band Old Blind Dogs, he has since built an acclaimed solo career, performing traditional ballads and original songs inspired by Robert Burns, William Soutar, and the Scottish folk tradition. Known for his guitar and harmonica playing, wit, and storytelling, Malcolm has released multiple solo albums, toured internationally, and in 2004 was named Songwriter of the Year at the Scots Trad Music Awards.
Jim Malcolm (born James Douglas Malcolm) is a traditional Scottish folk musician, singer-songwriter, and recording artist from Perthshire. With family roots in Scotland’s folk traditions through his mother’s involvement in the Traditional Music and Song Association, he grew up surrounded by music and began writing songs as a teenager. After studying at the University of Edinburgh, he embarked on a career as a professional musician, quickly establishing himself on the Scottish folk circuit.
For eight years, Malcolm was the lead singer of the world-renowned folk-rock band Old Blind Dogs, touring major festivals across Europe and North America and recording several albums with the group. Since then, he has enjoyed a prolific solo career, releasing more than ten albums and writing a body of songs that blend traditional ballads with contemporary themes. He is particularly celebrated for his interpretations of Robert Burns and has performed his own songs with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall.
As a solo performer, Malcolm is known for his simultaneous guitar and harmonica playing, warm vocals, and engaging stage presence. His concerts mix music with storytelling, humor, and history in the great Scottish troubadour tradition. Alongside accolades such as Songwriter of the Year at the 2004 Scots Trad Music Awards, his songs have been recorded by artists including Kate Rusby, The McCalmans, and Beppe Gambetta. Whether performing in Scotland, North America, or further abroad, Jim Malcolm continues to carry forward the living tradition of Scottish folk music with authenticity and charm.
