This time last year, I decided to make December my only scheduled appearance in the series, and invite a couple of friends I wanted to hear play, and maybe play a little with. This idea got off to a good start in 2024 when I had a great time playing with Leah Kaufman and Mark Dillon.
This year I've asked a couple of friend to join me who, well, I was there when they started out. About three years ago, I was substituting at Weaver Academy in their recording technology classes. A 16 year old, sorta goth looking girl, sat on the floor in the middle of the room, and started singing John Prine songs. All of my teacher decorum flew out the window as I explained "Who the hell are YOU?" Murphy and I exchanged links to our music and started communicating. About a year later, I helped her out with her first public gig, doing sound and playing a few songs before her and with her. Murphy is now a shining light in the NC Traditional Music world, and has a self-titled ep out on all the streaming services.
A year or two before that, Farmer Dave Farlow brought a fellow over to the Doodad Song Circle who played his guitar on his lap while singing his heartbreakingly beautiful songs in a voice that could only come from Rural NC. Since then Michael has put out two records, opened for the late Todd Snider, and worked with legendary songwriter-guitarist-producer Will Kimbrough. He also played at the very first Songwriters@Scup, along with Emily Stewart and myself. Hell, we even wrote a song together at a workshop at Laurelyn Dossett's home last year...maybe we'll play it.
Hope a lot of y'all can come down and help me celebrate the holidays and friendship.
