Bel Canto Company’s 43rd season opens with a concert inspired by fables, legends, and tales told to help make sense of the world around us. Stories passed down to us across the generations, born of the innate human desire to explain the inexplicable, are ingrained in our cultures and psyches. Mythical lore and mystical writings from disparate times, places, and cultures have always been a source of inspiration for composers. And that is to say nothing of the abiding influence the yearning for the divine has had upon music.
Join us and be entranced by:
"Caminante," by Andrea Casarrubios, featuring cellist Brooks Whitehouse, drawing inspiration from Spanish author Antonio Machado’s timeless poem
"Prometheus," by Kristopher Fulton, an evocative telling of the Greek myth wherein fire is brought from Olympus to Earth
"Yoshayv B’sayser Elyon," by Mark D. Templeton, a setting of Psalm 91 sung in Hebrew whose melodies and sonorities embody a sense of raw humanity
"Les Sirens," by Lily Boulanger and text by Charles Grandmougin, seduces the listener with melodies as beautiful as its namesake
Additional selections by Dan Forrest, Hugo Wolf, Eric Whitacre, Ivo Antognini, and more!
